Rats were partially sleep-deprived for 99 h using motorized wheels (3 h on/1 h off). FosB/ΔFosB immunohistochemistry was used as a marker of chronic neuronal activation. FosB/ΔFosB was induced in several sleep/wake, autonomic, and limbic brain regions. After 6 days of recovery from sleep restriction, FosB/ΔFosB was at control levels. FosB/ΔFosB may play a role in the allostatic responses to chronic sleep restriction.
