Bisphenol A (BPA) is a prevalent endocrine disrupting chemical found in food cans. Two canned dog foods tested, including one thought to be BPA-free, contained BPA. Two-week feeding of either canned dog food brand increased BPA levels in dogs. Serum BPA levels associated with serum bicarbonate ion and gut microbiome changes. Due to shared environments, dogs may be bio-sentinels for human health concerns.
