The Lévézou Dome (LD) is made of a migmatitic gneissic core surrounded by a basic belt. The belt is upturned, vertical to the west, and overturned to the north. This deformation postdates tangential movements and peak metamorphism. It implies a late vertical uplift and radial compression, presently without satisfactory explanations. The LD has striking analogies with the Vredefort Dome, a giant astrobleme including an external depression (The Witwatersrand Basin). The discontinuous Stephanian basins encircling the LD sensu lato remind of an external depression, suggesting that it is also the central part of an astrobleme, ca 50 km wide.
