Photocatalysis is effective for conversion of many pharmaceutical contaminants in water. Rate of conversion correlates with molecular weight. Functionalities such as aldehyde, alcohol, ketone and amide, promote rate of conversion. Conjugated aromatic systems (adenosine, caffeine, imidazole) show low reactivity.
