Giving birth at home without the assistance of a midwife can be understood as a conflict between inner responsibility, power and control and insecurity in relation to the outside and the societal system. The women who gave birth without professional assistance took decisions that had influence not only on the birth of the baby but also on the societal borders. Some women may be more sensitive to attitudes and activities that are routinely performed during pregnancy and childbirth.
