First report of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) phenotype disseminated in hospitals in the north of Iran. Amongst 160 clinical Escherichia coli isolates, 83 (51.9%) produced ESBL. CTX-M was found in 86.7% of ESBL-producing strains, followed by TEM in 32.5%.
