Fungal dissolution of phlogopite in solid cultures. Chemical changes documented with SEM-EDS and charge contrast imaging (CCI). The ‘marks’ of direct fungal hyphal attachment are overridden by ‘global’ intense acid leaching processes. Decreasing octahedral and interlayer cation contents that produced Al-rich smectite. Hyphal attachment to phlogopite surfaces, penetration between sheets at the edges.
