We demonstrated the power of pictures in the mitigation of chronic pain in a clinical context. All categories of pictures (ie, photographs of loved ones, strangers, beautiful landscapes, and optical illusions) reduced affective and sensory perceptions of pain. Images of loved ones were rated the most pleasant and reduced pain intensity the most. Picture valence mediated the association between type of pictures and reduction of pain intensity.
