DNA processing is a relatively early event during harvest-induced senescence of Asparagus officinalis spears. Nuclear DNA nicking and the fragmentation of genomic DNA into ladders was visualised by in situ TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL), gel electrophoresis and Southern analysis. Laddering was not visible at 1 h after harvest but was apparent after 6 h coinciding with increased senescence-associated RNA activity (Plant Physiol. 100 (1992) 1661), and preceding the physiological changes associated with asparagus spear senescence (Physiol. Plant. 80 (1990) 393).
