A revised theoretical analysis of aerodynamic optimization of horizontal-axis wind turbines is made including drag effects. It is formally demonstrated that all blade sections have to operate at maximum lift-to-drag ratio for optimal performance. Optimal axial and tangential induction factors are determined adopting a different approach those found in the literature. Optimal operating conditions of the turbine can be quickly found as functions of the maximum airfoil lift-to-drag ratio.
