Laser shock peening enhanced corrosion properties in a nickel based Inconel 600 superalloy

Laser peening induced residual stresses reached −672 MPa (maximum) and 0 MPa (1400 μm from surface). Work-hardening up to a depth of 400 μm. Roughness of ≤1 μm resulted in peened surface with column or steps like feature. Corrosion rate decreased about 106 times at laser peened surface. XPS results indicate a better passivation at laser peened surface.
