Localisation of epidermal growth factor (EGF), its specific receptor (EGF-R) and aromatase at the materno-fetal interface during placentation in the pregnant mare
In equine pregnancy EGF is secreted by the uterine gland epithelium. In equine pregnancy EGF-R is expressed on the surface of the trophoblast cells. Expression of EGF and EGF-R increases just prior to commencing placentation. Aromatase is expressed by trophoblast cells throughout equine pregnancy. Oestrogens likely synergise with EGF to stimulate placental development.
