Daily PM2.5 composition (organic and elemental carbon and inorganic ions) was determined at four sites in the Po Valley. Data demonstrate the importance of orography and local meteorology on PM2.5 mass and chemical profiles in different sites. Nitrate is the major PM2.5 component in winter, primarily in the inner part of the region. Carbonaceous aerosol is impacted by traffic and biomass burning in winter, while secondary processes dominate in summer.
