The method is sensitive for lignans detection and it is also possible to quantify very low concentrations of podophyllotoxin. Five species of Lamiaceae show the presence of aryltetralin lignans, specially podophyllotoxin and its precursor. Lamiaceae may potentially serve as an alternative source of podophyllotoxin.
