Microbial community metabolic functions in different CW designs were assessed. CW design differentiate interstitial water microbial profile (MP) but not biofilm. Biofilm and interstitial water MP were different in unsaturated and saturated CWs. Biofilm MP correlated better with pollutants removal than did interstitial water MP. Plants promoted higher microbial activity and metabolic richness only for biofilm.
