The first report on the contamination of POPs in ballast sediments. Three kinds of POPs in ship ballast sediments were detected. Atmospheric deposition was an important origin besides surface runoff. Ship activities were considerable contributors of some POPs. The results were helpful to adopt IMO convention amendments.
