Sulfated polysaccharide fractions were extracted from the brown seaweed Laminaria japonica. Sulfated polysaccharide were tested in the rat model of acute kidney injury (AKI). Sulfated polysaccharide fractions appear effective in attenuating AKI in rats. Sulfated polysaccharide may exert a renal protective effect through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
