Lowering the charge on porphyrins decreases binding affinity but increases selectivity for GQ. Electrostatic interactions play a major role in binding of cationic porphyrins to GQ DNA. Stabilization temperature determined in FRET strongly correlates with porphyrin's charge. Tricationic 4P3 is superior to TMPyP4 in its selectivity and stabilizing ability toward GQ.
