A methodology is presented to estimate the hydrokinetic energy potential at the outflow of a hydropower plant.

The site selection is based on the river stream velocity and depth that are compatible with the turbine diameter.

The Saint-Venant model is applied to the flow simulation and is validated by ADCP measurements.

The design velocity is based on the stream velocity frequency and the site energy density.

A case study is presented based on the Tucurui hydroelectric power station in Brazil.
