Recently mated males of the moth Achroia grisella show precopulatory mate guarding.

We exposed recently mated males to the playback of a male courtship song.

Exposure to competition induced extended guarding but no increase in sperm transfer.

Mate guarding intensity and sperm expenditure were independent of female mass.

A second experiment demonstrated a male, but not female, response to male competition.
