The perinatal environment can affect anatomical structures and physiological functions and thereby influence health and disease in later life. Ovarian reserve is fully established at birth and declines thereafter, resulting in menopause. 1% of women are affected by a depletion of ovarian reserve before the age of 40, termed premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). Perinatal conditions might be a risk factor for POI.
