Oncology health professionals face many challenges in communicating with patients from minority backgrounds. This qualitative study aimed to identify oncology nurses' and oncologists' individual experiences in communicating with minority patients. Many participants experienced challenges in balancing beliefs about patient autonomy with cultural differences regarding the role of the family. Participants used strategies such as modified speech, taking more time in consultations and nonverbal techniques to facilitate interactions. Oncology nurses and oncologists may need formal training tailored to developing culturally competent communication.
