PTCDA preferentially adsorbs on steps of vicinal Ag(111) surfaces.

It bunches the steps to well defined facet planes.

The development of the 16 occurring facets is studied in detail.

The faceting mechanism is an orientational phase separation driven by different bonding strengths of PTCDA.

The faceting minimizes the surface free energy.
