A ‘retro-engineering’ of the protein sparing effect for the potential preservation of n-3 LC-PUFA from catabolism was evaluated. There were no differences in fish performance, but trends were apparent in relation to the sparing of shorter chain fatty acids. This study provides insight into new strategies for the potential optimisation of fish oil use in aquaculture.
