Nesting cavities in trees persisted a median of 6 years. Highest persistence was for non-excavated cavities in living trunks of large trees. Cavity persistence increased with tree species-specific wood density. Cavity persistence did not vary among primary and degraded forests and farms. Human-modified habitats can provide few but high quality tree cavities.
