Researchers consider arterial calcification to be a progressive pathology which must be treated. Arterial calcification has been considered as ‘sub-clinical atherosclerosis’, yet lipid-lowering fails to regress it. Both presence and absence of coronary calcification predict plaque rupture and CV events. We hypothesise that calcification develops as an immune response to endothelial injury. We should be attempting to prevent all causes of endothelial injury, including oxidative stress.
