A two-step mechanism can account for the resistance to leaching in pure water of iodate-substituted hydroxyapatites (HA-CaI). For unsaturated conditions, the leaching of HA-CaI in pure water at 50 °C corresponds to a congruent dissolution. For saturated conditions, the leaching of HA-CaI in pure water at 50 °C corresponds to an exchange between IO3- and OH- ions. In a clayey water, the leaching of HA-CaI is lowered by the immediate precipitation of Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2. HA-CaI could be a suitable conditioning matrix for radioactive iodine that is particularly adapted for a clayey environment.
