This UK audit collected data in 4931 patients undergoing emergency CT for abdominal pain, 109/188 eligible radiology departments participated. Audit reporting standards were met for major discrepancy for initial registrar and onsite Consultant initial and addendum reports. Offsite, outsourced CT reports failed to meet the audit standard for major discrepancy, finding most marked in surgical patients. There are significant reductions in major discrepancy and patients coming to harm with increased seniority and the reporting radiologist onsite. The study results highlight the need for solutions that will facilitate high quality and timely out of hours CT reporting.
