Organic dyes@SiO2 NPs showed in vitro PDT activity against a human lung cancer. Anthraquinone@SiO2 NPs react by hydrogen abstraction in the triplet excited state. Cell apoptosis could be initiated by both H abstraction as well 1O2 mechanisms.
