Discusses the novel system of rock socketing to anchor the piers of the new Northumberland Straits bridge to Prince Edward Island, Canada. The technique uses a special 2m diameter composite drill bit with secondary retractable under-reaming slot cutters. The drill cuts a series of equally spaced circumferential shear grooves in the walls of the rock socketed piles. The grooves provide greater resistance to pull out than conventional smooth piles, allowing shorter reinforced concrete piles than originally planned.
