Knee and ankle reflexes may be hard to obtain in the elderly using standard methods. We show that non-standard methods can improve detection of these reflexes. We suggest the following strategies: for knee jerk, use standard method and then if that fails, superior patellar strike. We suggest the following strategies: for ankle jerk, use plantar strike and then, if that fails, Achilles strike elevated.
