We combined multi-regional input–output analysis with ecological network analysis.
We used this approach to study China's Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei agglomeration.
We accounted for both direct and indirect energy consumption.
The ecological roles of the three regions did not change greatly over time.
The results provide support for guiding the urban agglomeration's development.
