Laboratory tests were carried out to model the lubrication process in pipe jacking. A novel triaxial interface shear testing apparatus that was developed is described. Injection of lubricant under pressure reduced shearing resistance by over 90%. Effective stress reduction at the interface is the main beneficial lubricant effect. Injection pressure is a better predictor of lubricant performance than volume.
