Addiction and hyperalgesia limits the clinical use of morphine and other opioids. We investigated effects of buspirone in morphine addiction and hyperalgesia in rats. Addictive as well as hyperalgesic effects of morphine are inhibited with buspirone. Pain perception is also reduced in repeated higher-dose buspirone-treated animals. Lower doses of buspirone are more effective in reducing morphine addiction.
