Non-government angling-based websites were surveyed for the presence and accuracy of best practices guidelines for catch-and-release fishing. Of 183 websites, less than 9% mentioned catch-and-release fishing and associated details that were in line with scientifically evaluated best practices. Some national NGOs with a large membership base provided a high number of best practice guidelines for catch-and-release fishing than most smaller NGOs. Education and outreach strategies for communicating best practices for catch-and-release fishing should include reaching smaller, local and regional NGOs to potentially increase the effectiveness of this conservation tool.
