This study compared catch and bycatch of hoop nets between two types of bait: ground cheese logs and ZOTE© soap. Catch of the target species, channel catfish, and bycatch of other fish species was similar between bait types. Aquatic turtle bycatch was 61% less in nets baited with ZOTE© soap and survival after being caught and released was higher. Environmental variables associated with catch and bycatch could be used to develop more efficient sampling strategies.
