The first Thai baby conceived through IVF in Thailand was born in 1987. Assisted reproduction was associated with Thai modernity and nationalist success. Thai Medical Council Guidelines failed to prevent commercial surrogacy and ova donation. Public revelation of illegal practices brought assisted reproduction into disrepute. In 2015 new legislation was introduced closing down the commercial international ART trade.
