Introduction and objective

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and represents the most common cause of dementia, with 60 % of all dementia cases. During the last Conference of the Alzheimer's International Association 2011, presented the results of an international survey conducted in 5 countries (USA, France, Germany, Poland, and Spain). The main objective of our work was to apply a simplified and adapted from the original survey to evaluate the perception and the level of public knowledge about Alzheimer's disease and the point of view regarding the value of making a diagnosis of the disease.

Subjects and methods

In August 2011 the survey was applied to 360 subjects in the waiting rooms FLENI and Zubizarreta Hospital of Buenos Aires. The average age was 50.33 ¡À 16.6 years. 68.9 % (248) were women. 60 % had less than 12 years of education. The Alzheimer's disease was the third biggest health fear after cancer and stroke. More than 85 % identified the common symptoms of the disease. About 40 % considered a fatal disease. 90 % want to know the diagnosis, if they have the disease. 25 % believe there are effective treatments for the disease. 50 % believe there is a definitive diagnostic test.

Conclusions

The public opinion survey shows the fear and concern in relation to the disease, the need to provide a diagnosis and get a better public education.
