Differentiation has been proposed as a core mechanism in episodic memory. Interference was studied in a list strength paradigm with pure and mixed lists. Strengthening items at study changed the pattern of interference at test. The results were discussed with reference to how differentiation provides a unified explanation for the presented effects.
