Host range estimates of a parasite are confounded by sampling effort. An iterative approach is developed and used to optimise host sampling for three mistletoe species. Stable predictions of the number of primary hosts were generated. High host richness and high proportions of rare hosts required greater sampling effort. Spatially-applied results-based stopping rules generated comparable estimates of host range.
