Ring formation around giant planets by tidal disruption of a single passing large Kuiper belt object

Origin of rings still remains elusive. We investigate the possibility to make rings through tidal disruption of massive KBOs.

This could happen several times during the Late Heavy Bombardment.

SPH simulations show that about 1% of the mass of the KBOs can be trapped. Thus, rings around giant planets could be initially massive enough to produce their regular satellites.

Tidal disruption can explain the observed diversity of ring-systems.
