This research pursues an empirical approach to road safety studies.

It considers how the interplay between road geometry and driver behaviour affects the segmental change of crash rates for day/night.

Casualty crashes are clustered on curves during the day, but randomly distributed at night from the headlight effect.

The results can be used by local and national authorities for location-specific public policies.
