Intracellular filaments are strong polyelectrolytes, extracellular filaments are not. DNA and cytoskeletal filaments are released by cell rupture or exocytosis. Intracellular polyelectrolytes are aggregated by extracellular polycations. DNA/polycation bundles can stimulate immune cells. Polyelectrolyte aggregates alter fluid rheology and inactivate antibacterial factors.
