Our codon usage bias was low in four species of Bungarus. The compositional constraints together with gene expression level might influence the patterns of codon usage among the genes of Bungarus species. The codon usage patterns of the genes in B. multicinctus share similarity with that of B. candidus while B. fasciatus with B. flaviceps. Nature favours the most over-represented codon AGA (arginine), GGA (glycine), CTG (leucine) and TCT (serine) in B. multicinctus, B. candidus, B. flaviceps and B. fasciatus respectively. Both natural selection and mutation pressure affect the codon usage pattern in Bungarus species. Natural selection played a major role while mutation pressure played a minor role in the codon usage pattern of the genes in Bungarus species.
