Callus culture system of Gynochthodes umbellata for the production of anthraquinone has been standardized for the first time. Calluses produced the highest amount of anthraquinones on medium with 1 mg/l 2, 4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. The most suitable explant for culture establishment was leaves from in vitro plants. Callus culture is an alternative source of anthraquinone throughout the year, without endangering natural population of G. umbellata.
