Alan Rugman's theory of the regional multinationals represented his last major contribution to international business scholarship, and it has encouraged the development of a new stream of research in the field of international strategic management, as well as in the broader management discipline. Derived from rich empirical evidence, Rugman's theory of the regional multinationals emphasizes the importance of the triad economy in the world economic system and sheds new light on research regarding the strategy and structure of large multinational enterprises. We present key conceptual issues in the scholarly debate on regional multinationals that should be addressed in future research.
