Free-standing NiO–MgO nanosheet catalysts with high heat transfer are developed.

The NiO–MgO nanosheets are in-situ grown onto Ni-foam struts and thermally treated.

The catalysts are active and selective for the high-throughput COMR process.

These results offer a strategy to prepare the foam-structured nanosheet catalyst.
