Raccoon dog, a vector for many pathogens, is an invasive species in Estonia and its numbers are high.
We screened 249 raccoon dogs for Echinococcus multilocularis in Estonia.
1.6% of individuals were infected with E. multilocularis.
Based on EmsB genotyping the Estonian isolates shared an identical genotype with E. multilocularis in northern Poland.
The role of the raccoon dog must be taken into account when assessing the E. multilocularis related risks to public health.
