The objective is to evaluate 3rd generation HIV testing patterns for US air force members.
Annual rates of HIV infection ranged from 16.7 to 20.6 per 100,000 persons.
Blacks/African Americans were at highest risk compared to Whites (risk ratio of 7.9).
Indeterminate Western blots (WBi, 15%) were nearly as common as positive results (19.4%).
Transition to 4th generation assays will avoid WBi challenges in low risk populations.
