Effect of the intrinsic shale anisotropy was studied on caprock failure pressure in SAGD Projects. A coupled HTM model was developed for caprock integrity assessment in thermal operations. The constitutive model captures transversely isotropic elastic behavior and anisotropic failure. Assuming isotropic behavior for a case study led to 7% overestimation of the failure pressure.
